Echoes of the Sea
Situated along the coastline, the building’s architectural language draws inspiration from the rhythmic motion of waves and the evocative poetry of Finnish writer Edith Södergran. In her work, the sea emerges as both a tangible natural force and a profound symbol—expressing themes of freedom, solitude, and boundless possibility. This duality is embedded in the museum’s design, where movement through its spaces evokes the sensation of wading through water, immersing visitors in an experience that mirrors the depth and fluidity of the ocean.

The building’s surface unfolds in undulating twists and interwoven connections, creating the striking impression of a frozen wave when viewed from the sea. This dynamic form establishes a creative dialogue with Helsinki’s historic harbor and the Baltic Sea coastline, seamlessly blending contemporary architecture with the rhythm of its natural and cultural surroundings.
The building’s use of wood materials creates a sense of warmth while honoring the rich tradition of Finnish architecture. Its distinctive form and immersive spatial experience establish the museum as a new public landmark, reinforcing Helsinki’s identity as a hub for architecture, design, art, and culture. More than just a destination, the museum invites visitors into a world of discovery, fostering new experiences and meaningful encounters.

The interior of the new museum breaks away from the conventional enclosed-box design, instead weaving Helsinki’s city landmarks and harbor views into the exhibition experience. Every opening in the structure frames a distinct cityscape, fostering a seamless visual connection between the museum and its surroundings. Additionally, a series of outdoor exhibition spaces—ranging from terraces to rooftop platforms at varying heights and orientations—offer visitors dynamic perspectives to appreciate the beauty of the South Harbor.

The building’s interior spatial composition is inspired by cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, and exhibition halls, as well as the dynamic energy of vibrant commercial centers. At its core, a central atrium connects all functional spaces, enabling visitors to navigate the museum with ease. The fluid circulation system accommodates diverse activities, including exhibitions, events, meetings, and dining, fostering an adaptable and engaging environment.
On the southern side of the site, the museum’s logistics and technical workshops are strategically positioned with direct access to Laivasillankatu Street, ensuring efficient transportation of artworks and materials. A large freight elevator links these areas to the exhibition spaces and other functional zones, operating independently from visitor circulation to maintain seamless logistics.

The new Museum of Architecture and Design occupies a highly sensitive site at the intersection of Helsinki’s historic city center and the planned South Harbor waterfront district, while also falling within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Suomenlinna. Its volume is carefully shaped in response to both the neoclassical urban grid and the emerging urban fabric along Laivasillankatu Street. Rising three stories, the building maintains harmony with its historic and future surroundings, redefining Helsinki’s coastline without obstructing views of key heritage landmarks.
