A Place to Train

Set on a coastal estate California, this contemporary equestrian center seamlessly integrates with the dramatic topography. Our client, an accomplished show jumping rider, acquired the property with the goal of creating a private, world-class training center. The property boasts an impressive array of features, including a 14 horse stable, a two-story barn with observation deck, and a riding arena with an ebb and flow moisture control system that maintains a perfect riding surface.

The 36,000 square foot arena is a vital component of the center. Constructing a large, flat area on the sloping site was a significant challenge in part due to the to strict code requirements on grading enforced by local agencies, We worked closely with engineers and environmental consultants to develop a creative solution for reshaping the hilltop. The stables terrace down the hill, maximizing the level surface for the riding arena and ensuring safety for the horses and riders.

The sightlines of the property were carefully organized to create a memorable approach from the estate’s main residence to the stables, treating residents and guests to a scenic route along a tree-lined path.

Sandstone veneer, metal siding, and stucco clad concrete walls enclose the barn structures. Metal roofs supported by exposed wood rafters float above providing shelter and serve to unify the complex. This architectural language and material palette speaks to the main house which utilizes the same materials and colors.
